rocky point historyRocky Point is one of the youngest municipalities of the state.  It initiated its foundation in 1927, being a simple fishing field that received fishermen from all the state during the fishing season.  During this period, the temporary inhabitants lived in carps and caves that were located over sand dunes.  In 1929, this settlement was known as “Punta de Piedra”  or “Punta Peñasco” due to the large volcanic formation that merged into the Sea of Cortes.  This fishermen field was strongly attractive ated for its medicine value.  Its history continued up to 1932, when the settlements increased and a police headquarters was created, that was part of the municipality of Sonoyta.  In 1941, Rocky Point had 187 inhabitants and on December 4, 1941 it obtained the category of Municipal Commissariat.

Rocky Point is located at the northwestern part of the State of Sonora.  It borders to the north with the United States and the municipality of General Plutarco Elias Calles, to the northeast with San Luis Rio Colorado, to the southeast with Caborca and to the south with the Gulf of California.  Its is a recently discovered paradise by tourism that offers 350 days of sun per year and a warm 23 Celsius.

There are almost 100 kilometers of fine-sand beaches where the desert and the sea join as two presents from nature than mingle perfectly to show attractive tidelands, an island full of birds and marine wolves.  Other attractions include yacht rides and sports fishing in an area that is known for its huge biodiversity.  Likewise, for those who enjoy nature, Rocky Point has one of the most interesting biosphere reserves: the old volcanoes, huge craters and large lava extensions make this place the perfect one to learn about nature.  If the latter is of your interest, it is recommendable to hire a trained guide since the area is rocky and the ground has different levels that might present some risky.  Also, make sure to wear light clothes as well as the appropriate footgear.

The development of the region’s tourism zones has accelerated the economical activity.  Rocky Point is a constantly expanding region that offers everything needed for the tourism industry: hotels and first-class restaurants serving seafood as well as international, Mexican and Japanese food that will satisfy the most demanding ones.
